IDC Honors PRiSM for Pioneering Satellite-Based Rice Monitoring at 2024 Future Enterprise Awards

IDC has recognized the Philippine Rice Information System (PRiSM) with the Special Award for Sustainability at the 2024 IDC Future Enterprise Awards, highlighting the program’s innovative use of satellite technology in digital agriculture. Out of more than 6,000 nominations submitted by 3,000 organizations across 12 Asia-Pacific countries, PRiSM stood out for its regional leadership and commitment to sustainable farming.

Director Glenn Dela Cruz Estrada and Dr. Eduardo Jimmy P. Quilang accepted the prestigious award in person at the regional ceremony held on November 19, 2024, at Singapore’s Sands Expo and Convention Centre. Their acceptance marked a pivotal moment for the Philippines, highlighting the nation’s growing prominence in leveraging technology for food security.

The timing of the ceremony held special meaning for the PRiSM team, as it coincided with the PRiSM National Convention in the Philippines, a gathering that celebrated a decade of innovation and the system’s 10th anniversary of service to the agricultural sector.

Director Estrada expressed deep gratitude to the Department of Agriculture’s Regional Field Offices via a live video call from Singapore. He emphasized that their commitment to their partnership with PRiSM forms the foundation of its international success.

Dr. Alice Laborte, IRRI-PRiSM project leader, noted that this international accolade affirms the strong partnership and shared commitment to sustainability among collaborating agencies. She emphasized that advanced science and technology are now directly improving the livelihoods of Filipino farmers.

The Department of Agriculture regards this achievement as a crucial step toward building a more inclusive and digitally advanced rice value chain. The integration of space-based technology with evidence-based planning ensures the Philippines is better equipped to secure national food production in the face of climate challenges.
