Remote Sensing Specialist Airs on Radio, Helps Prepare for La Niña’s Threats

Nadzmi Danila Jr., one of PRiSM’s remote sensing and crop modelling specialists, appeared on four different radio stations to urge farmers to prepare for the increased threat of La Niña—a weather phenomenon expected to last from October to December this year and possibly into early 2026.

A Meteorologist by profession, Danila was featured on DWAY 1332 Sonshine Radio (Bukid at Buhay), DWET 1179kHz AM (Madiskarteng Pagsasaka), Radyo Natin Malita DXSA, and Lingkod Bayan DWNE 900kHz Teleradyo from October 6 and 7.

During these appearances, Danila explained that challenges brought by extensive La Niña rainfall—including widespread flooding, crop rot, and dangerous spikes in rice blast disease can be addressed through climate-smart solutions, citing proper drainage systems, submergence-tolerant rice varieties, and the use of Small Water Impounding Projects (SWIP) for aquaculture or irrigation during dry spells as these precautions can help farmers cope with La Niña, preventing severe reductions in harvest quality and market value.

He also emphasized that preparation and adaptability are essential, urging farmers to consistently practice proper water management techniques, such as Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), and to maintain close coordination with agricultural experts for vital guidance during this critical weather event.
