2023 PRiSM Regional Assessment (Region 9, 12, and BARMM)
May 16, 2023
The Philippine Rice Information System (PRiSM) conducted a Cluster-Wide Data Assessment for Region 9, 12, and BARMM on April 27 to 28, 2023, at Viajera Dine and Café in Koronadal City, South Cotabato.
The purpose of the event was to re-capacitate PRiSM Data Collectors in the monitoring and gathering of ground data for rice in Regions 9, 12, and BARMM. The assessment also aimed to identify the constraints and problems encountered in the previous data collection and to discuss continuous improvements, innovations, updated protocols, and new information technology tools in preparation for future implementation.
During the activity, Ms. Emma Narca, DA-Region 12 Alternate Rice Focal Person, highlighted the continuous improvement and innovation being conducted by the Department of Agriculture, from traditional to digital, in her message.
“Digital agriculture is rapidly gaining traction in the Philippines, as the government and private sectors recognize its potential to transform the country’s agricultural landscape. The use of modern technology enables farmers to increase their productivity and efficiency while reducing costs and mitigating the impact of climate change.
One example of which is the use of precision farming techniques, such as remote sensing and GPS mapping, to optimize crop yields and improve soil health. These techniques are currently being employed by the Philippine Rice Information System (PRiSM).
Enhancing these capabilities and initiatives, along the way we can achieve quality data through PRiSM. Farmers then can also access digital platforms that provide real-time weather data, market prices, and other critical information to help them make informed decisions,” Ms. Narca explained.
Thirty-six participants composed of PRiSM Data Manager and Communications, PRiSM Focal and Data Collectors, Regional Rice Coordinators, Agriculturists, Agricultural technicians, and Local Farmers’ Technicians attended the said activity.
