The National Development Economic Authority Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Environment (NEDA ANRES) research team recently visited the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) from August 15 to 16, 2023, to explore the potential of the Philippine Rice Information System (PRiSM) in addressing the challenges of inflation.

During the visit, the NEDA ANRES research team assessed the viability of utilizing PRiSM technology for anticipatory inflation action. The research team also aimed to enhance their understanding on the operation of PRiSM with emphasis on its data generation processes.

NEDA ANRES OIC Assistant Director Rory Jay S.C. Dacumos commented on the use of PRiSM technology for inflation monitoring and decision-making, stating, “One way is to examine the production outlook. By understanding the rice production outlook, we can make informed import decisions, for example decisions like importation should not coincide with peak harvest season. This way, the critical information provided by PRiSM becomes invaluable.”

Mr. Dacumos also highlighted the potential use of remote sensing and satellite technologies, such as PRiSM, in generating data-driven and evidence-based anticipatory information that can support policy recommendations.

OIC Executive Director for Research and PRiSM project leader, Eduardo Jimmy P. Quilang, expressed his appreciation for the NEDA ANRES research team’s initiative in visiting and exploring PRiSM. He emphasized that PRiSM will continue to provide accurate and timely information on rice production to fulfill the needs of policymakers.
